(that’s what aristotle said anyway)

We care about every project and personally handcraft design solutions that work.

There are five distinct stages to our design process. This may vary for particular projects or design disciplines. This information may be useful to understand the processes involved. Before the project is started, however, a vital question has to be asked: ‘Why do you need a new identity, brochure or website etc?’ This question is the key to undertaking a successful design project.

(with these simple steps to success)

First it’s about understanding our clients; their needs, their main objectives, their inner business. It’s about forming a relationship and working with our clients, not for them. At this intial stage we dicuss requirements and brainstorm ideas so we can draw up a formal plan.

We research current brand perceptions; Analyse competitors strengths and weaknesses; Consider target audience, business goals and visions; Decide how to position the brand to best influence consumers perceptions and communicate the message.

As the customer you will need to supply images or logos as high resolution files, copy as text in a word format. Approximate costings for the project are calculated at this stage.

When the initial proposal has been accepted and everyone agrees on the details, preliminary design ideas are developed. This is where the creative process is given free reign within all the constraints established in. Considerations may be colour combinations, typography and graphic style. I might end up with a lot of visuals – some concepts work and some don’t. I also like to move away from them for a day if possible to see them with ‘fresh eyes’. I generally present three concepts to my clients for review, usually in pdf format.

The selected concept is worked up with all details implemented. Variations may be developed as well as further mock-ups. A logo would be created with subtle variations, different colours, fonts etc. A brochure might have photographs commissioned or purchased from a library which would need selection and approval. The thing to remember is that this is an organic process and details can be changed if necessary. Final costing for production would be created at this point.

After approval, finished artwork is produced. For print this usually involves the creation of print-ready pdfs and detailed specifications are created for outside suppliers. For websites, my designs are converted into html code for example by a programmer.

Quality control is important so I prefer to oversee production myself through to completion. In the case of print it usually just means checking printer’s proofs although the pdf system is very reliable.

The colour, shape and material used in packaging design can help create a strong and familiar brand. Standing out amongst competitors’ products and influencing purchasing decisions are critical factors when developing brand packaging. Pollen continues to produce great packaging for our clients. Good packaging design seduces potential buyers, creating a sense of desire to not only take a product home, yet also has practical reasons behind its uses. As well as selling products, packaging has the important roles of protecting the product through transportation and storage, and also facilitating its use.

Pollen has extensive experience in full print design and production. Different to virtual media, a printed item allows the customer to interact with the design in a tangible way – to hold and feel the paper, turn pages – creating a connection that can be very powerful and meaningful. Print covers the design of all printed material, including posters, flyers, business cards, letterheads, advertising, press brochures direct mail booklets and more. It involves the design of content into layouts that will engage the audience and communicate its intended message. There are many considerations to take into account, including the shape and dimensions of the printed items, as well as paper choice and embellishments like foil stamping and embossing.
